Conflict in the Middle East has again escalated. Hamas missiles and Israeli air-raids are claiming civilian casualties on both sides. The Jewish community in Switzerland is deeply concerned about relatives and acquaintances in the region.
The SIG and the Platform of Liberal Jews of Switzerland PLJS are shocked and concerned about the latest developments in the Middle East. What began as skirmishes in Jerusalem swiftly escalated and is now affecting all inhabitants of the region.
Shocking number of casualties
Missiles and grenades are hitting Israeli cities, which has led to a fierce response by the Israeli military. A ceasefire is nowhere in sight. On the contrary, the situation appears to be deteriorating. Numerous Swiss Jews have relatives and friends in Israel, many of whom are directly affected by the continuous onslaught of missiles fired by Hamas, leaving fear and destruction in their wake. The escalation has led to a frighteningly high number of casualties on both sides. People are standing in front of ruined homes and lives are being lost. Panic is on the rise and hatred is being stoked.
End the spiral of violence
The massive firing of missiles at civilian targets by the terror organisation Hamas is horrendous and inacceptable. Swiss Jews in Switzerland are with their relatives and acquaintances in Israel in their thoughts and hope that they remain safe. They also hope that the spiral of violence will come to an end as soon as possible, and that reticence and reason will prevail. Despite the difficult situation in the Middle East, we will continue to propagate and work towards good relations between the Jewish and Muslim communities in Switzerland.
